How to remove EXIF data from photos

Every photo your phone takes is two things at once: a picture, and a small database about the moment you took it. That second part is called EXIF data, and it routinely includes the exact GPS coordinates of where you were standing. Most people have never looked at it, which is precisely why it is worth ten minutes of your attention.

What EXIF data actually is

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a block of metadata written into the file alongside the pixels. Cameras use it to record the settings of a shot; phones add far more. None of it is visible when you look at the photo — you have to open the file's properties or run it through a tool to see it.

Here is what a typical smartphone photo carries, and what each field gives away:

The last three rows are harmless and genuinely useful. The first two are the reason this article exists.

The risk is more ordinary than you think

The scenario people imagine is dramatic and rare. The realistic one is mundane: you list a bike for sale and photograph it in your driveway, you post a picture of a new puppy in the back garden, or you send a contractor a photo of a leaking pipe. Each of those files can carry the coordinates of your home. Anyone who receives the original file — not a screenshot, the original — can read them in seconds with free software.

It matters most for files you hand over directly: marketplace listings where you email or message the full-resolution image, forum and blog uploads, files attached to emails, and anything you put in shared cloud folders.

Which platforms strip EXIF for you

Large social networks re-encode uploads and drop most metadata in the process. That protection disappears the moment you send the original file instead. This is the single most useful thing to know about EXIF:

Rule of thumb: if the recipient can download a file that is the same size as the one on your phone, the metadata is still in it.

How to check what a photo contains

How to remove it

On iPhone

Open the photo, tap the share button, then Options at the top of the share sheet, and switch Location off before you share. That covers one-off sharing. To stop it at the source, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera and set it to Never.

On Android

In Google Photos, open the image, swipe up and choose Remove location. To turn it off permanently, open the Camera app settings and disable location tags or "save location".

On Windows

Right-click the file → Properties → Details → Remove Properties and Personal Information. Choose "create a copy with all possible properties removed" so you keep the original if you need it.

On Mac

Preview can remove location: Tools → Show Inspector → GPS tab → Remove Location Info. For other fields, exporting the image to a new file drops most metadata.

The platform methods are fine for one photo. For a batch — a marketplace listing, a folder of holiday pictures, images for a website — a tool is faster. When you should keep EXIF

Stripping metadata is not always the right move. A worked example

Say you are selling a guitar and have eight photos taken in your living room. You message the buyer the full-resolution files, so nothing strips them for you. All eight carry the same GPS point — your home — plus the timestamps and your phone model.

The fix takes under a minute: drop all eight into a metadata remover, download the cleaned copies, and send those instead. The pictures look identical; the coordinates are gone. As a bonus, the re-encode usually makes the files smaller, so the message sends faster. If you also want them lighter for a listing page, run them through the compressor afterwards.

Does removing EXIF data reduce image quality?

Only very slightly, and usually not visibly. Most tools re-encode the image to discard metadata, which applies one more round of compression. At high quality settings the difference is invisible to the eye. If you need a pixel-perfect original, keep the untouched file in your own storage and strip a copy for sharing.

Do social media sites remove EXIF data automatically?

The big platforms do. Facebook, Instagram, X, Reddit and WhatsApp all re-encode uploads and drop metadata from the public file. Email attachments, cloud share links and images uploaded to your own website do not — whatever you send is exactly what the recipient receives, GPS included.

How do I remove location data from many photos at once?
